Welcome to Mackay Boats.....

Builders of high performance sailing dinghies.....

Specialising in Olympic 470 and 49er classes.....

MacKay Boats have a long and successful reputation for building world-class high performance dinghies. In the 60s,70s and 80s we built the Flying Dutchman class.   Our boats were used by New Zealand crews at the Olympics from 1964 through to 1992.   In the 90s we began building 470s and 49ers.  Our boats have been used to win  the 470 World Championship six times and the 49er World Championship three times.   In Olympic competition Mackay boats have won 9 medals.

At MacKay Boats we are all keen sailors and  have successfully competed in 470s and 49ers at World Championship level. We understand the importance of having the best possible equipment and we know what makes a fast boat.  We get great satisfaction from seeing our boats winning, and we are committed to keep MacKay boats at the front of the fleet.

Owen Mackay is the master of GRP boatbuilding and moulding techniques. He has been building GRP boats from his own factory for 17 years and there is not much he doesn't know about how to produce the perfect boat. Owen sailed the traditional 'P' class in his youth and has been involved with the sea ever since. He was with NZ Olympic team in 1984 as a boat builder, and has managed several NZ surfboat teams competing internationally. He knows the requirements of high performance.
Dave MacKay works on the fit-out and sales side of the business and will most likely be the person you deal with at MacKay Boats. He has sailed competitively in 470s and Flying Dutchman and socially in 49ers. Highlights have been a 3rd in the 470 Worlds, winning the ISAF double handed Youth Worlds and pre-Olympics (470) and competing in the 1984 Olympics in the FD. Dave has been travelling to many of the major 470 regattas around the world in recent years and has his finger firmly on the pulse of developments in the class.
Nick keeps things rolling in the fit out shed. He sailed 470s up to 96, 49ers up to 2000 and is right up with the play in both classes. A lot of skill is required to interpret the information that we receive for the lay-out of each 470. Nick has to understand exactly what the crew has in mind before he can start with the fittings.  Nick has been with MacKay boats for 7 years.
Daniel goes hard and is extremely focussed. With the vast number of procedures and processes involved in building a 470, you have to be on top of your game. Daniel is our planner and keeps things on schedule in the laminating shed. He has his own boat and is a pretty good fisherman.
Brad is skilled in both epoxy and polyester laminates.   He is builds the internal fames for the 49er as well doing the hull and deck laminates.   Brad sails in the NZ Yacht Squadron youth match racing team.
